Hair Extension Methods

Here is some helpful information to keep in mind while comparing methods.

STRAND BY STRAND or FUSION KERATIN

This technique is where the hair extensions are attached to small pieces of the hair with a small keratin bond. Strands of about 20 to 30 individual hairs can be attached with either a keratin application point or with a micro link. This is often referred to as a fusion keratin bond.

Fusion hair extensions refer to extensions bonded to your natural hair using a hot tool that fuses hair keratin together. Fusion hair extension may be considered as permanent because they last longer than the usual wear-and-remove hair extensions. Fusion hair extensions are commonly reinstalled every two to three months. This type of hair extension may have a nail tip, v-tip, or flat tips and these tips are the ones bonded to your hair without the use of rings, clips, links or tubes. There is also the I-tip fusion hair extension that uses a heat-sensitive tube as well.

MICRO-LINK OR I-TIP/COLD FUSION

This is a hair extension method where small sections of your hair are pulled through a small bead or lock and clamped shut with a special tool.  Most companies use copper cylinders lined with silicone to protect your natural hair. The removal is easy and quick. There is no heat or glue used with this method.

TAPE-IN WEFT

Tape in hair extensions is the newest method of extensions available.  They are applied using either double or single-sided polyurethane tape.  With double-sided tape, the weft is applied to the hair after the backing has been removed from one side.  The weft and the attached hair are pulled upwards, and another weft is applied to the other side of the tape to “sandwich” the hair.  Clients with extremely thin hair, especially around the temples and side of the head, may require a single panel applied with single-sided tape.
